TM, P, and T - Television - The Move - Paranoia
Posted on: 2007-10-11 15:19:25

Monday was the last trip to Terre Haute that was taken. We reached the point where we really needed to unpack what was here, so that we both had boxes and totes to pack up more and to simply make room here at the new place. I have a little more sorting to do, but for the most part, everything that is here and still packed is either going into storage in the basement or requires some of the stuff still up in Terre Haute. So tonight, or early tomorrow, I am running back up and spending the weekend finishing up. Needless to say, I am looking forward to Sunday. Too bad the basement isn't enough to move our friends in...or Moggers, they are about the only thing I will miss about TH.

The new place is testing my paranoia, sorta. It has an ADT system built in, which lets us know if anyone has entered the house. That is kinda cool, but we also have motion sensors in a couple of rooms, which is kinda creepy to me for some reason. There is also the angles, which I am still getting used to. Basically, we have a lot of windows here, neighbors in almost every concievable direction, and a near total unfamiliarity with the people around me and what they are like. Oh well, I guess that is something that will fade as time goes on...the paranoia, not the windows, neighbors, or, knowing us, the unfamiliarity.

I am finding that actually having cable is much like playing an MMORPG: you are not living your own life and instead moving through the motions of others, it is a near total waste of time that could be spent doing something useful, it sucks up time and chains you to the couch for hours longer than you intend, and it has a monthly cost asigned to it. There is also one more thing I have noticed: advertising. When a new expansion is due out for an MMO, all you see is stuff for the expansion. When I watch TV, half the adds are for my cable provider...even stuff that is not available for us to buy. It is just annoying to me.

MMORPG vs. Cable

I would rather be sucked into a MMORPG then T.V. I mean sure it is a waste of time and all, but it doesn't bore you to death (or sleep whatever) with the damn advertisements. And some of this damn things can be so ungodly fucking annoying that you start to become homicidal (or suicidal or genocidal). With the MMO you don't have to worry about listening to the damn thing (which I do with the mute button anyways), or here some bullshit about something you loath(e?). *Yawn* anyways I'm going to run around in circles, and then luagh at the world. Ah hahahahaahahahahaahh (etc)!!!!!!1!!!!! O that would be fucking cool if you could put Moggers into your basement. You could get some off of your rent for the money it might generate.:) Yeah now I'm going to run away! Ha Ha!!!!!

Cable: My Perspective

There is a value there, you just have to find it.

What works for me...

- Football for The Wife, means more gaming for me

- Food shows for both of us, means more ideas in the kitchen for both of us

- Coutroom dramas, SciFi, Comedy, Music, the variety means a time I do not have to intereact, but can view/hear something I enjoy (that is if it's any good)

- Combined with Internet access and/or phone service (no cable phone here without a modem, blech, so I use AT&T), means lower cost for having the combo.

Anyway, yes, advertisments prevail, but a DVR has fastforward, so I typically DVR whatever I want and watch it post-broadcast. If I see an advertisement flash by that peaks my interest, I can always stop to view it.

Oh, lastly, if you want to interact with your cable, there is the mainstream media news (CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, Fox, CSPAN1, CSPAN2, etc.), that you can laugh at or yell at for your pleasure. The crap they try to spoonfeed you is amazing. Don't believe a word they say, always confirm the story through research online. The only "unbiased" or "fair and balanced" news you will get in today's world will be from your own research.

That's my take.

Welcome to your new home!

I'm so glad to hear you are all together again!

Cable is good for a few things. Cartoons for the kids and The Office. And Battlestar Galactica which needs to start up again! (I think Nov 24th) Oh and I bet you can find Star Trek reruns at any time of the day depending on the channel.

I kinda dug the first couple of seasons of Battlestar, but the last like six episodes of last season left me wanting. I was terribly disappointed with the direction the show was going and I think the only thing that could save the show would be to finish it off this season with Bob Newhart waking up in bed with Suzanne Pleshette talking about a wierd dream he had.
