Scary Operations - Computer
Posted on: 2007-07-06 15:16:30

I am sitting here waiting on my desktop to finish up its current task. I have been wanting to wipe it for some time because it has been acting odd, but between files being backed up on it, random media, games, and clutter I did not have enough storage to back it up to do so. Along with that, I have been setting up my laptop and making sure it has everything needed/wanted from my desktop before I potentially lose it.

So today, I got everything in order(ish) and managed to move files around between the computers so that if I do lose what is there, I won't be crying. But, I still have about half my drive full of stuff that I don't want to have to find again (or waste DVDs burning to back up since they are not quite that important). I decided to give Gparted a try. What this program does, or at least is supposed to do, is resize a drive in a non-destructive manor. In my case, I have a 150GB drive with around 75GB full. Ideally, this program will let me turn my free space into unallocated space, so I am shrinking to 80GB and then creating a second 70GB partition. If it works, I will then toss files from the 80GB to the 70GB to free up more space on the 80GB, then more resizing. My end goal is about 40GB main and 110GB storage.

Setup was very quick and painless. For some reason I assumed it would be harder than it was even though it should be straightforward. That being said, it is going to take forever to discover if it actually works since it is going to take at least another hour to finish, and that is just the first resize. If all goes well, I am still planning on wiping and reinstalling Windows tonight. Lucky for me, all the stuff to work on my latest project are on Lightman,
