New project: HoL - Site News - Hol

hol

The wife gets on these kicks and periodically I either step in or am 'volunteered' to help. The wife wants a way to catalogue our books, movies, and music, so she turned to me. I wrote rantfest (our blogging software, that will probably never be finished but still works well) and RCM (the nearly forgotten comic maker) from scratch, so why not make a program to do the cateloging. I have been intermittently (mostly off because of the influx of WoW) working on it for the last month.

I am calling the project Hol, as you probably guessed from the logo. I nearly finished the first part earlier today, the data input script (or 'Item' input), and I am fairly pleased with it. Now I just need to sit down with the wife and go through the placement of controls with her, and then that will be done. Next up with be the Item edit, followed by the search pages, and finally the Author edits. The Item edits should be very quick to create, test, and be done with. The search pages will take the longest to make even though the should be the easiest to code...there is just a lot of work there. And I keep convincing myself that the Author pages are going to be hard, but that is probably just because breaking the Author table will take some manual effort to fix. If my guestimation is right, I would say I am about 15-20% done.

It is fun working on it, and I am gleaning some stuff that will help with changes I have been making to rantfest. Oh, and yes, this is an update about a project you may never see. Have fun.

From scratch?

Do you use any program like access to generate your file structure or is it really totally from scratch? I'll have to look at it some time when I'm up visiting.

I guess technically, I did not create the database program and I use a couple of modules in perl that were provided from our host. There is a lot of database manipulation done in both rantfest and RCM from creation of tables to simply polling data.

I guess more what I meant when saying 'from scratch' is there are tons of differnt types of blogging software/websites that do it all for you (Katie and Sarah use Blogger, Greg uses Typepad, etc), where I wrote the scripts that generate what you are seeing...all of what you are seeing.

Never, never; never never

The bizarre punctuation on that phrase always bothered me. But we will never forget RCM.

I'm looking forward to this library software— sounds like a cool project. And I'm proud that you're taking the step of canceling WoW. We'd like to see you again.
