Symbolic Ban on the word Nigger. - Misc - Humor - Annoyances
Posted on: 2007-03-01 07:03:19

I caught a link to a Reuters article via digg.com. According to the article, "New York City symbolically banned use of the word nigger". You know what, I think it is a great idea to ban the word nigger. I personaly do not like the word nigger. I don't like to use the word nigger. In fact, hearing the word nigger, regardless of whether it was meant to be offensive, makes me cringe. After reading the article, I sat here and thought long and hard about the word nigger. I gave myself time to reflect on why I don't like the word nigger. I also reflected on the negative aspects of banning the word nigger. Freedom of speech very quickly came to mind as a big negative of banning the word nigger, but since this is just a symbolic ban with no real punishment we can still say the word nigger if we need or want to (we just have to know that it is bad).

So join me and New York and inform everyone you know that saying nigger is bad. Only by making sure that everyone knows the word nigger, and that the word nigger is bad, can we hope to eliminate its use.

Nigger, please!

Sorry, I overstepped by bounds.

I should have said, "Nigga, please." Because that is totally different.

Derivatives

What about derivatives, such as "wigger" and "sand nigger?" Is such terminology still acceptable? I do not know how my vernacular could survive in this modern age without such words. For instance, when my mother calls to converse about my cousin's taste in music: "Pssh. Mom, he's totally wiggered out. There is no excuse for listening to that rock-a-billy shit."

Please clarify. If "sand nigger" is no longer valid, is it because of the word "nigger" within it? Would it be more correct to use the term "towel head?"

Why do I feel as if we've had this conversation before?

Use "Wigro" and "Sand Wigro."

1984 called and hung up on this one...

Yeah

I thought about doing the whole government censorship with this one and then I thought about doing the banning a word will just make it more powerful. But in the end I decided to go with the irony angle of telling you something and then telling you to forget it.

nigger heads / coral fossils

I guess I have to start calling the fossils we used to collect as kids coral fossils rather than the name I grew up with. Kinds wish I had a few of those old fossils. Reminders of childhood.
