MMO crazy.
Posted on: 2005-06-20 05:03:39, by talam

I ran over to mmorpg.com to see where StarWars Galaxies ranked with other MMOs. I knew it was not in the top five anymore or even in the top 10, but I had no idea where it was. It came in 15th, which is not too bad giving the fact that it is really dying and we just came out of the CU where I would guess 30% of the accounts were dropped. I was insanely amused that Puzzle Pirates came in 6 spots higher than the the Matrix Online. It is funny that a kids MMO puzzle game ranks that much higher than a more adult game that was based off a fairly successful movie series.

While there I noticed a banner to get Anarchy Online for free. Way back in the day I had thought about jumping on it. I wanted to play a sci fi based MMO and it was one of, if not the first. I did some reading, but heard some bad things about it. To date it had the worst launch and first month of nearly any MMO ever. Anyways, after seeing just how they are doing the whole "free" thing I downloaded it, installed it, and loaded it up. I have never been so sad about graphics in my life. The interface is abysmal, the controls are crap, the graphics, as I already mentioned, were horrid, and finally the small amount of the community I was exposed to were asses.

I also noticed that there was a 14 day trial for City of Heroes. So I got it as well. It looked appealing the first time I saw it, but I was into some other MMO at the time so I ignored it. There were a few other things that steared me away from it, but mostly it was because I did not want to pay from more than one game at a time. Now that I have tried it, I like it. I can't see ever buying the game. It seems like one of the games where it is cool as hell for two weeks then boring as hell from then on. I did have a couple of problems with it: the graphics were slightly less than what I expected..but not bad, the skill path and enhancement system could be explained in the tutorial mission (which were pointless), the chat window will not split vertically so you really feel like you are losing a lot of room to it if you actually use it, and lastly, the community is a bunch of kill stealing stalkers.

Now, screw everything I just wrote...who many MMOs do you think I have on my system? EverQuest, EverQuest2, StarWars Galaxies, Puzzle Pirates (yes, it is an MMO), Anarchy Online, and City of Heroes...yes, 6. Anarchy Online will be gone within the week, City of Heroes will be gone after my trial is over, and Puzzle Pirates was just being used to move money between Erin's chars on her account. All three of these are in the free trials and were free downloads, so no money lost. EQ and EQ2 are really just here because because I have not gotten around to removing them. SWG is staying, at least for awhile...until I find something new that I want to take over my life.

it's done

Ok I just ordered SWG:Total Experience, even with shipping it's still cheaper than going to the mall. Should be here by next monday or so.

Even while drunk I couldn't find anything fun about that game. Even while drunk the graphics were bad and the entire feel was unimmersive. It was a major POS. And amazingly enough, it also sucked while sober.
Hmm...

Thanks for the reviews and yep, that is highly amusing that Puzzle Pirates is ranked so high.
