It is a Logitech MX700. This was their first model with a charging base station, and it was still the top of their line until about 6-9 months ago (don't remember when the MX1000 came out). Now it is kinda hard to find. I have had it for quite awhile now, it was a gift from a friend, and I have used the hell out of it. I have been noticing little things for awhile, all seemingly coincidental, that should have told me what was going on.
First, right after Opera 8 came out and I moved back to it for my primary browser, I noticed that the easy-scroll-up button, which I had programed for "ctrl+F4", stopped closing tabs in Opera. At first I assumed that it was because the hotkeys had changed in the new version, then I thought it was MouseWare software, but I finally just settled with there being something wrong with the interaction between them...no big deal.
My second problem came in SWG, right after the big Combat Upgrade. Prior to the CU they were testing alternate key configs to be more like standard MMOs, and just coming back from another MMO, I jumped on. After the CU, they default key config was kind of a combination of the two, but since I was already using one of the MMO ones it did not switch mine over. Now the right-click (at least in my config) switches the mouse mode. Right after the CU, I noticed that when I clicked it once, it would cycle back and forth 3 or 4 times and end on a radom mode. So I would have to hit it a few times to get in the mode I wanted and half the time would just fall back to using the keyboard to do it. When I am just standing there or even when I am driving around it is not a big deal, but when I am bouncing between rooting 2-3 things in a confinded space while not wanting them to hit me, it becomes a HUGE deal. But given the timing it was blamed on software as well.
The third issue was what made me realize it was the mouse and not software related. I was moving files from directory to directory. I always drag with the right mouse button because I like the little box that specifically asks if I want to move, copy, or copy shortcut. Anyways, while dragging the files in Windows Explorer and not letting go of the button, somehow drop the files in the first directory they were hovered over, then pick up that directory, drag it to the next directory, rinse, repeat for about three directories until I realize what I am doing. I patiently moved everything back, tried again, same thing, rinse, repeat...curse. And since I installed last I have not had any updates to either Windows or my MouseWare package they really can't get the blame.
To buy the same mouse, it is gonna be almost $50, which I guess is better than the $70-80 it was originally. I am also wandering if I want to upgrade to the MX1000, which will be around $70, but is supposed to be 20x better tracking and has a couple of menial features that are kinda nifty. I am fairly sure I can't go back to a two, three, or even four button mouse. It has to be cordless which makes the charging bay almost required to save on batteries. Unlike almost everything else in life, I am a brand whore when it comes to computer accessories made by Logitech (tehy = ownz), so other brand mice don't exist in my book. Oh well, maybe I will just let this one die and not get another mouse so I can get even better at key commands.
